The United States on Friday welcomed the announcement of the withdrawal of Eritrean troops from the war-torn Ethiopian region of Tigray, calling it an "important step" towards a "de-escalation of the conflict."
State Department spokeswoman Jalina Porter told reporters Washington was "encouraged" by the announcement of the pullback by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
"The immediate and complete withdrawal of the Eritrean troops from the Tigray region will be an important step in de-escalating the conflict, as well as restoring regional peace and stability," she said.
Porter noted the "role" that US Senator Chris Coons, who recently traveled to Ethiopia at the request of President Joe Biden, played in the latest development.
