100 days later, here is Julian Alaphilippe again . The Soudal-Quick Step rider won this Monday on the second stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné between Brassac-les-Mines and La Chaise-Dieu (167.3 km). The Frenchman easily overcame the few difficulties spread over the course before sprinting a reduced peloton. He is ahead of Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) and Eritrean Natnael Tesfatsion (Trek-Segafredo).

Seven riders had taken the morning breakaway. Among them, four Frenchmen: Donavan Grondin (Arkea-Samsic), Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies), Nans Peters (AG2R-Citroën) and Kenny Elissonde (Trek-Segafredo). However, these men never really hoped to play for victory since their lead did not exceed two minutes.

"You can't ask for more"

Under the impetus of the Soudal Quick-Step first, then the Jumbo-Visma, the peloton gradually got closer to the breakaways, to finally catch the last thieves ten kilometers from the finish. The victory was decided in a sprint, despite an orphan peloton of several riders. Julian Alaphilippe surprised everyone by beating Richard Carapaz on the final false flat. The Yellow Jersey, Christophe Laporte, fails in 4th place but retains his yellow jersey, tied with the winner of the day.

“These last few months have been long, I have been patient and I have been able to come back to the Dauphiné, it is a great relief, underlined the former world champion on arrival. I had good legs so I made my effort at the right time. Winning a stage in the Dauphiné, you couldn't dream of better. Whatever happens, I'm happy with my week. It's promising. »

The Frenchman, victim of several falls in recent months, has been chasing a great victory since the first stage of the Tour de France 2021 . He had to settle for two stages, the Tour of the Basque Country and the Tour of Wallonia, and the Ardèche Classic. This victory puts him back on track for the next Tour de France, where he will be the leader of his Belgian team.
