Police charge 10 more people in connection with violent northeast Calgary brawl

There are now 21 people in total facing 47 charges in connection with riot at Eritrean community event in September

Ten more people have been charged in connection with a violent brawl in northeast Calgary almost three months ago.

The Sept. 2 clash involving about 150 people in a dispute over strife in the East African nation of Eritrea left shop fronts and vehicles damaged in the parking lot of Falconridge Plaza, and a dozen people with minor injuries.

Dawit Abadi Bernkhel, 36, Dawit Ghebrenuguse Beraki, 36, Mosazghi Michael Rusom, 20, Efrem Estifanos Gebremedhen, 25, Andom Petros Tesfamariam, 34, Mussie Gebregzabhier Aberah, 33, and Amanuel Tekle Tekue, 40, are all charged with rioting and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Angosom Misigna, 34, Musie Zerezghi Estifanos, 25, and Aman Araya Michael, 28, are charged with rioting, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

All of the newly charged individuals are set to appear in court on Jan. 9.

“I want to thank members of the community who have come forward with information,” Supt. Scott Boyd of the Calgary Police Service said in a news release. “We have received tremendous support from the community during this investigation, and we continue to ask for assistance identifying remaining people of interest. If you know anyone who was involved in this incident, or if you were involved yourself, I strongly implore you to come forward to police.”

Police have now charged a total of 21 men with 47 Criminal Code violations

Previously, Ykhlo Brhaane, 35, Daniel Negasi, 36, Okbazghi Tesfamichael Haile, 32, Habtom Haile, 33, and Efrem Haile Gebru, 38, were charged with rioting and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Angosom Bahta, 35, and Tesfaldot Hailemariam Gebrekid, 27, are charged with rioting, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
