Richard Carapaz secured victory in the penultimate stage of the Tour de France in the mountain classification. The Ecuadorian from EF Education - EasyPost took over the polka dot jersey from Slovenian Tadej Pogacar after the nineteenth stage on Friday. In the final mountain stage, he took enough points to secure the overall victory in the mountain classification.
Carapaz had collected enough points after passing the top of the Col de la Colmiane, the penultimate climb. Only an individual time trial will follow on Sunday. Two years ago, the Tokyo Olympic champion won the mountain classification in the Tour of Spain. In the Tour, he will succeed the Italian Giulio Ciccone.
For Biniam Girmay, the victory in the points classification is a fact. That only had to be confirmed on Saturday. The chance that the Belgian Jasper Philipsen would win points in the mountain stage was almost zero. Girmay, from the Intermarché-Wanty team, received his first green jersey after the fifth stage. The Eritrean won three stages in this Tour and has a 33-point lead over Philipsen. In the final time trial on Sunday, a maximum of 20 points can be earned. Philipsen won the green jersey last year.
