Racer Merhawi Kudus conquered the Ijen climb and won the 2024 International Tour de Banyuwangi Ijen.

BANYUWANGI, KOMPAS — A racer from the Terengganu Cycling Team, Merhawi Kudus , conquered the Ijen climb which was the last stage of the 2024 International Tour de Banyuwangi Ijen , Thursday (25/7/2024). Kudus conquered the fourth stage with a time of 4 hours 36 minutes 58 seconds.
Teammate Metkel Eyob followed him with a time of 4 hours 36 minutes 9 seconds. Third place went to Neverte Benjamin Prades with a time of 4 hours 37 minutes 9 seconds.
Kudus Merhawi made a surprise because he was not recorded as the fastest racer in the previous three stages. He only showed his ability in the fourth stage which was full of climbs. By finishing the fastest, he was entitled to wear the Ijen Sulfur Jersey. He also has the right to hold the title of ITdBI 2024 climb king and wear the Reborn Jersey.
When interviewed after reaching the finish, Kudus, who is from Estonia, said that the Ijen climb was quite challenging. However, he was still able to overcome it because he had previously conquered a higher climb in Spain.
"From a difficulty level of 0 to 10, I rate (the Ijen climb) a 9," said Kudus.

Kudus was also impressed by the Banyuwangi community who since the first stage always gave encouragement to those who were competing. "I say thank you," he said.

In the last stage, the best sprinter or G-Land Jersey was pinned to Martin Laas from Ferei Quick Panda Podium Mongolia Team. Meanwhile, Muhammad Imam who previously dominated the third stage was finally pushed down to 12th place in the category of the fastest racer in four stages.

Imam said that he was never in the lead when on the uphill track. However, he set a high target because he had the Yellow Jersey. "So, like it or not, I have to fight to maintain the Yellow Jersey," he said.

ITdBI is an annual bicycle racing event in Banyuwangi. This event is included in the United Cycliste Universale (UCI) calendar, an institution that has the right to issue bicycle racing licenses in the world.
Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani previously said that the Tour de Banyuwangi Ijen racers would pass through the Ijen Geopark sites which are currently included in the UNESCO Global Geopark (UGG) world geopark network.
"We designed the Tour de Ijen to combine sports, nature, and culture. In this biosphere reserve area, racers will explore the pristine Alas Purwo forest," said Ipuk.

Racer from Terengganu Cycling Team, Eyob Metkel managed to become the second fastest in the fourth International Tour de Banyuwangi Ijen (ITdBI) 2024.
Eyob Metkel is a racer from Eritrea who was born on September 4, 1993.
Eyob Metkel is not a fake racer, he came to compete in the 2024 International Tour de Banyuwangi Ijen (ITdBI) armed with sweet results with the Terengganu Cycling Team at the National Championships Eritrea ME-Road Race (NC).
At the National Championships Eritrea ME-Road Race (NC), Eyob Metkel managed to finish the race in third place in the final standings.
Meanwhile, the racer from Terengganu Cycling Team, Merhawi Kudus, managed to become the fastest with a time of 4 hours 34 minutes 56 seconds.
Completing the top three was VC Fukuoka racer Benjamin Prades with a time of 4 hours 37 minutes 03 seconds.
Closing the top five was St George Continental Cycling Team rider Alexander Evans who recorded a time of 4 hours 38 minutes 29 seconds.
The fourth stage is also the final and toughest stage in the UCI (Union Cycliste International) 2.2 standard event, covering a distance of 167 KM.
