As tech firms seek ensure the behaviour of AI systems will be aligned with human values, might philosophers have something to contribute? That’s a question posed in this article by AC Grayling and Brian Ball of Northeastern University London. “More generally,” they continue, “what can be expected of the age-old discipline in the new technologically advanced era that is now emerging?”

Among their considerations: “Science has so far been unable to fully explain how consciousness arises from the cells in the human brain.
