ROME\ aise\ - “I am delighted to represent Italy in Eritrea, also in light of the deep historical ties that exist between the two countries”. These are the first words of Alfonso Di Riso in his role as the new Italian ambassador to Asmara .
“My mandate will be aimed at promoting sincere and fruitful collaboration between Rome and Asmara in all sectors of mutual interest”, assured Di Riso, to whom the Farnesina sent its congratulations in a tweet.
Born in 1965 in Naples, where he graduated in law and political science, Alfonso Di Riso entered the diplomatic career in 1997. His first assignment was in Diplomatic Litigation, Treaties and Legislative Affairs. In 2000 he was second commercial secretary in Kuala Lumpur, where he was confirmed as first commercial secretary. In 2003 he was first secretary in Teheran, until 2007, the year in which he returned to Rome to the General Directorate of Personnel.
Counsellor in Algiers in 2009, he was confirmed in the same office with the role of first counsellor. In 2013 he was appointed Chargé d'Affaires with Letters in Abidjan - and then ambassador -, accredited, with ambassadorial credentials, also in Niamey (Niger), Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), Monrovia (Liberia) and Freetown (Sierra Leone).
He returned to the Farnesina in 2017 and was appointed head of the Unit for Industrial Relations and Innovation of the Directorate General for Resources and Innovation. In 2021 he was ambassador in Yerevan and now arrives in Asmara. (aise)
