"When I woke up here, I followed the team's program," he says. "So the news doesn't bother me. I still have a contract with my team (until the end of 2028, ed.) and that's not over yet, so I'll keep focusing on the races I'm going to ride."
It's questionable whether Girmay's current contract with Intermarché-Wanty will still be worth anything after this season. Should the merger with Lotto go ahead and the Lotto team be designated as the paying agent , all Intermarché-Wanty riders would be free to sign contracts elsewhere. This would offer the Eritrean leader the option of moving "for free."
For Girmay, the focus in the Canadian two-part series was primarily on the GP de Québec. He managed to follow an attack from Tadej Pogačar in the final , but ultimately, a good result wasn't in the cards. "I felt good there. It's a shame I couldn't get a result, but some strong riders were out," he said. "It's nice that I was able to follow Pogačar. It was his first race, as preparation, but that gives me confidence for the coming days."
"I want to keep working on these short efforts, also going forward, so I can keep up. In the monumental classics, you need this to win. That's why it feels good to be able to follow Pogi here ," said Girmay, who is primarily riding for Louis Barré in Montreal and sees opportunities for himself in the GP de Wallonie next week.
