Egypt reiterated its rejection of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), considering it a unilateral measure devoid of any international legitimacy, despite efforts to grant it legitimacy. In response to a statement by Ethiopia's representative at the UN General Assembly, Egypt's representative stated that the GERD does not respect international law or the governing system of the Nile Basin under international law and agreements. He emphasized that there are numerous and significant violations of international law, including disregard for the Security Council's presidential statement of September 2021.
He added, "Ethiopia must look at itself if it wants to identify who is undermining security and stability on the continent," noting that "Ethiopia is the one that signed a memorandum of understanding that threatens the unity and sovereignty of Somalia, a sister African country. It is the one that attacked Al-Fashaga in Sudan. It is the one that launched a war on Eritrea and is threatening it with a new war to gain access to the sea. It has also imposed restrictions on it."
The Egyptian delegate continued, "This is what Ethiopia is doing, not Egypt," rejecting Ethiopian allegations against Egypt, its role on the continent, and its rights to the Nile River. He emphasized that "Ethiopia is violating international law, the principles of good neighborliness, and the sanctity of borders in Africa."
He pointed out that "Ethiopia seeks to control the Nile River and deprive Egypt and Sudan of their historical waters," calling on Addis Ababa to "wake up from this illusion of power and stop making fabricated claims." He argued that the Ethiopian government is trying to create external enemies due to its turbulent internal situation and is seeking to export its problems so they can be consumed domestically.
