Substantive hearings are about to begin in Zwolle, the Netherlands, in the important case against Eritrean national Tewelde Goitom (also known as “Walid”)

Pearce Inquiry - Information on the content of the case

On November 3, the substantive hearing of a criminal case concerning large-scale human smuggling from Libya to Europe via the Mediterranean Sea will begin at the Overijssel District Court (Zwolle location). The suspect is facing various charges, including human smuggling, extortion, and money laundering. Nine days of hearings are scheduled for the substantive hearing. The hearings can be followed via a livestream on rechtspraak.nl . There is limited seating in the courtroom.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, the man on trial is the ringleader of a large international human smuggling network. He is suspected of human smuggling, extortion, violence, and money laundering, among other things. The victims of the human smuggling are mostly refugees from Eritrea who paid for passage to Europe but became victims of human trafficking in Libya. According to the indictment, this was often accompanied by serious assault and other misconduct.

Livestream

The hearing will be broadcast via livestream because the court values public access and anticipates significant public interest. This ensures that everyone can follow the substantive hearing. A livestream will be available with Dutch, English, and Tigrinya audio.

Information for the public

The hearing will be held in the Zwolle courthouse. The hearing is open to the public, but seating in the courtroom is limited. Video rooms are available on some days, but these too have limited capacity. This means that if the rooms are full, the public will no longer be admitted to the courthouse. Furthermore, entering the courthouse at the time of day does not guarantee a seat in the courtroom. Advance registration is not possible for the public.

The livestream can be followed on all hearing days via this link.
