Almost 1,500 have sought asylum this year: Minister calls it a historic low

The influx of asylum seekers to Denmark this year has been dominated by applicants from Afghanistan and Eritrea.

In the first nine months of the year, 1,490 people applied for asylum in Denmark.

This is evident from a statement from the Ministry of Immigration and Integration, which calls it a low asylum influx.

The number of asylum seekers in September, which is the most recent figure in the count, was the lowest for that month in five years.

The 1,490 applicants in the first nine months of the year are also fewer than in the corresponding period in the last three years.

"Historically few asylum seekers are coming to Denmark," says Minister of Immigration and Integration Rasmus Stoklund (S) in a press release.

"I am happy with this development, but we will of course continue to follow the development. Because it is important that the influx remains under control."

In September, 182 people applied for asylum in Denmark. The largest nationality in the group is Afghans, who make up 34 of the applicants.

The second largest number came from the East African country of Eritrea, while 14 asylum seekers from Syria constitute the third largest nationality.

Looking at the entire year through September, Eritreans are the largest group, followed by applicants from Afghanistan and Syria.

The three countries are also among the most frequent countries of origin when looking at asylum applications in Denmark in the past few years.

Overall, 2,333 applications for asylum were submitted last year, compared to 2,479 the year before.

It was a sharp drop from 2022, when a large group of Ukrainians - 2,070 - suddenly caused the number of asylum seekers to increase to 4,597.

But it is still a long way from the levels seen a decade ago, a period that has since been referred to as the refugee crisis.

It peaked in 2015, when 21,000 applied for asylum in Denmark. At that time, Syrians also made up the largest group.
