Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard is visiting Eritrea where she met with her Eritrean counterpart Osman Saleh.

– During my visit, we will discuss regional issues such as the war in Eritrea's neighboring country Sudan and issues that are significant for the relations between our countries, says Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard in a statement.

The two-day visit is the first by a Swedish foreign minister since Sweden recognized the country's independence in 1993.

The visit to Eritrea was first noticed by Blankspot , which noted the government plane's destination. Information about the Swedish visit was published by Eritrea's Ministry of Information.

"The two foreign ministers discussed bilateral relations between Eritrea and Sweden, regional developments, and peace and security in Africa and the Red Sea region," Eritrea's Ministry of Information writes on its website and publishes a picture of the visit.

Maria Malmer Stenergard will also meet with Eritrea's Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, among others.
