Egypt plays a pivotal and influential role in adopting the issues of the African continent, supporting regional stability, and advancing the development process in various countries of the African continent. This has made Egypt open to its African depth in recent years, in light of the Egyptian state’s keenness, under President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, to strengthen and deepen cooperation relations between Egypt and African countries. The visit of Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki to Cairo expressed the strong and close relations that bind the two countries. The meeting between President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the Eritrean President reflected the importance of the growing relations between Egypt and Eritrea in light of the rapidly evolving challenges and successive regional transformations in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region, which make coordination between the two countries a strategic necessity to maintain regional security and stability.
The talks and consultations that brought together the Egyptian and Eritrean presidents confirm that Egyptian-Eritrean relations have gone beyond the stage of traditional cooperation to the level of a strategic partnership based on common interests and a converging vision towards the issues of the region. Egypt views the Horn of Africa as a direct extension of its national security, while Eritrea represents one of the most important regional partners capable of contributing to consolidating stability and protecting common interests in this vital region.
The meeting carried clear political messages, most notably the emphasis on respecting the sovereignty of states and their territorial integrity, supporting development and stability efforts in the countries of the region, as well as strengthening economic, trade and investment cooperation between Cairo and Asmara, in a way that achieves the interests of the two peoples and opens new horizons for bilateral cooperation.
The talks also gained special importance in light of the ongoing developments in Sudan, where Egypt renewed its firm position supporting the unity and sovereignty of Sudan and rejecting any threat to its stability, a position consistent with the Eritrean vision calling for maintaining the stability of neighboring countries and preventing the expansion of the circles of conflict in the region.
On the Red Sea issue, a clear Egyptian-Eritrean consensus emerged regarding the importance of maintaining the security of maritime routes and rejecting any attempts to impose regional arrangements that bypass the role of the Red Sea littoral states. This consensus reflects a shared understanding that the security of the Red Sea is the inherent responsibility of the littoral states, and that the stability of this vital waterway is a cornerstone of global trade and regional security.
The visit of Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki to Cairo comes at a very important time, and confirms that Egypt continues to build a network of effective regional partnerships based on cooperation, mutual respect and the achievement of common interests. It also reflects the ability of Egyptian diplomacy to strengthen its presence in its African environment, which contributes to supporting security, stability and development in a region that is one of the most important and sensitive regions in the world from a geopolitical standpoint.
In light of the current challenges and the tensions, conflicts and disputes that the region is going through, the Egyptian-Eritrean partnership appears to be a model of responsible regional cooperation, based on dialogue, coordination and respect for the sovereignty of states, which enhances the opportunities for peace and development and serves the interests of all the peoples of the region.
