An informed Egyptian source expressed great surprise at the recent statement issued by the African Union Commission regarding what the statement described as the escalating tension between Ethiopia, Eritrea and Egypt, stressing that Cairo considers the inclusion of its name in the internal Ethiopian issue to be incomprehensible.
In response to a number of press inquiries, the source stressed that Egypt is proud of its African affiliation and of being one of the founding countries of the African Union, explaining that Egypt’s foreign policy is based on the rules of international law and the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and the Constitutive Act of the African Union, including respect for the sovereignty of states, non-interference in internal affairs and commitment to good neighborliness.
The source added that the current crisis in Ethiopia is an internal crisis and has nothing to do with Egypt, stressing that we must not be swayed by attempts by some to divert attention from the real internal motives behind what is happening in Ethiopia.
The source stressed that such moves will not help to calm the situation in a sister African country that needs the support of the African Commission to get out of the cycles of chronic conflicts it suffers from.
He noted that Egypt continues its commitment to working diligently in coordination with its African brothers to meet the legitimate aspirations of the peoples of the continent’s countries in spreading peace and security and strengthening economic and investment partnerships, in order to achieve a better tomorrow that brings dignity, well-being and prosperity to African countries.
