ETHIOPIA IS IN CIVIL WAR — 2026
This is no longer simply a political crisis.
Look at the evidence:
Seven Ethiopian armed and political organizations have formally created the Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival, declaring their intention to remove Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government and establish a transitional government. The alliance includes the TPLF, Amhara Fano, OLA, ONLF, and armed movements from Afar and Benishangul-Gumuz.
What does that mean?
1. Organized armed opposition
Multiple armed movements are coordinating against the federal government.
2. Sustained fighting
Major fighting has returned to Tigray, with federal forces and opposition forces engaged in renewed military operations.
3. Territorial control is being contested
Opposition forces have seized strategic areas, while federal forces are attempting to retake them. Mekelle itself has changed hands during the renewed fighting.
4. Multiple fronts
The conflict is not confined to one isolated location. Armed opposition exists across several regions, including Tigray, Amhara and Oromia.
5. Former enemies are now cooperating
Groups that fought on opposite sides of the 2020–2022 war have now joined the same anti-government alliance.
6. Civilian suffering is escalating
Displacement, disrupted services, communications blackouts and reports of civilian harm are increasing as fighting intensifies.
7. The conflict is becoming regional
Ethiopia's confrontation with Eritrea has sharply deteriorated, while accusations involving Sudan and Egypt are adding another dangerous dimension. Eritrea has severed diplomatic relations with Ethiopia.
These are not merely signs of political instability.
They are classic indicators of civil war: organized armed factions, sustained fighting, competing centers of power, contested territory, displacement, civilian casualties and increasing regional involvement.
The question is no longer:
“Is Ethiopia heading toward civil war?”
