Dr. Elie Wiesel was a prolific writer, pacifist and a Noble
Prize Winner for Peace. I read his moving book: "The Night:Das Nacht" which was
originally written in French. During that fateful night, he was taken to
Auschwitz, a dreadful concentration camp where his mother and father murdered.
He was a very young at that time. His horrible experience like that
of Ann Frank shook his faith in God. This is because God
didn't come to rescue him, and the entire European Jewish at a time when an
unimaginable cruelty committed by Nazi Germany. Similarly, our forefathers
at the advent of Italian imperialism were bitter with God as the
following elegy denotes:-
ኣቦይ እዝጊ ነቦይ ብጣዕሚ በደሎ
ኣብ'ዛ ሃገር እዚኣ ዝፈጠሮ። (ኤርትራ)
Roughly translated:- God made a big mistake to let
my father born in this country (Eritrea)
In 2006, I saw Dr. Elie Wiesel at Dartmouth College
where he delivered a passionate commencement speech. See an
attachment.
May he rest in peace.
