Joe Biden, the US president, followed the announcement of his abandonment of his bid to be returned to the White House in November with a glowing endorsement of the vice-president, Kamala Harris. Many of the Democratic party’s big beasts have followed suit. Harris starts the race with several big advantages, and now has enough delegates to win the Democrats' presidential nomination.
On the other side of the aisle, Donald Trump and his team will have to rethink their strategy. Having spent weeks poking malicious fun at “Sleepy Joe” for being too old and frail to govern, now suddenly it’s Trump whose age will be a campaign issue.
Abortion rights, meanwhile, could now be the defining issue in the first presidential election since Roe v Wade was overturned.
