Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Eritrean counterpart, Osman Saleh, discussed strengthening bilateral ties, Red Sea security, and implementing the outcomes of the Alamein summit during a telephone call on Monday.

The ministers reaffirmed that the Red Sea's security and governance are the exclusive responsibility of its coastal states, according to a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

FM Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s full support for Eritrea’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nader Zaki said.

He stressed Egypt’s interest in expanding economic cooperation, increasing bilateral trade, encouraging joint investment, and boosting Egyptian companies’ participation in development projects in Eritrea for the benefit of both countries.

The ministers also exchanged views on developments in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea. Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of countries in the region, as well as the preservation of their national institutions.

The call also addressed ways to follow up on the outcomes of the quadrilateral consultative summit hosted in Alamein, with a view to promoting security, stability, development, and de-escalation in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.

The Alamein quadrilateral summit, held on 4 October, brought together the leaders of Egypt, Eritrea, Somalia, and Sudan.

Its joint declaration established a mechanism to follow up on the summit’s outcomes and provided for periodic consultations. It also affirmed freedom of navigation, respect for national sovereignty, and non-interference in states’ internal affairs.

Monday’s call followed talks with Somalia on 18 October that also addressed regional developments and implementation of the summit’s outcomes.

On economic ties, talks in September identified energy, industry, infrastructure, fisheries, and pharmaceuticals as potential areas of cooperation between Egypt and Eritrea.

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi also urged turning political ties into economic projects during talks with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki in New Alamein on 3 October.
