On the penultimate day of 2024, Biniam Girmay was awarded another prize, as if his year wasn’t memorable enough. He was voted African Cyclist of the Year.
Girmay beat South African Alan Hatherly, the first African mountain bike world champion and bronze medalist at the Paris Olympics, and Algerian Yacine Hamza.
The Eritrean excelled especially in the summer of last year, with three stage wins and the green jersey in the Tour. These earned him his fourth title of best rider from Africa, after he had already won it in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
It is also the ninth time in thirteen editions that an Eritrean cyclist has won the prize. Girmay follows his compatriot Henok Mulubrhan on the list of honours.
