Refugees on highway parking lot, presumably from Eritrea

Esselborn (dpa / lrs) - The 16 refugees who were picked up on a motorway parking lot in Rheinhessen on Tuesday have turned out to be Eritreans. A translator has confirmed that they speak the local language, a police spokesman said on Wednesday. Ten people were identified as youngsters and taken into custody.

According to the police, a witness had heard cries for help from a locked semitrailer on a semitrailer and alarmed the officials. Fifteen of the refugees were taken to an initial reception center in Ingelheim and one was taken to the hospital to examine his state of health. However, the suspicion of tuberculosis has not been confirmed, there is no risk of infection. Six of the refugees continued their journey in the morning, the police reported.

After the police operation in the parking lot Hauxberg near Esselborn (Alzey-Worms) the driver of the foreign truck was interrogated. The 27-year-old Serb had come from Belgium and was on his way to Serbia. The officials suspect that the refugees had been in Belgium since Belgium in the truck and want to go to England. Presumably they would have drawn attention to themselves when they realized that they were traveling the wrong way. The truck driver was allowed to continue his journey. The police continue to investigate on suspicion of smuggling.
