The Horn of Africa represents a different security and geopolitical reality after Ethiopia and Eritrea ended their twenty years of war in July of this year.
Unlike the allegations in the past and despite sanctions, Eritrea is seemingly playing role in terms of transforming the region into a region of cooperation – away from one that is an area of contesting interests.
Today, Prime minister Abiy Ahmed, President Isayas Afeworki and President Farmajo met in Asmara, Eritrea’s capital, to seal a tripartite agreement in the direction of fostering partnership in the region, which they did. Ethiopian and Somalian leaders arrived in Eritrea on their way back from China where they went for China-Africa Cooperation Forum.
The leaders from the three counties have agreed to enhance economic, political, social, security and cultural cooperations. At the core of the trilateral initiative is to attain mutual development.
After the agreement, Somalian president President Farmajo tweeted that development can be achieved through cooperation.
It is an honour to sign a Joint Cooperation Agreement with Their Excellencies President Isaias Afwerki and PM Abiy Ahmed in Asmara today. We agreed to enhance economic, political, social, cultural and security cooperation. Through meaningful cooperation we can attain development.
