Moavero meets Ethiopian and Eritrean counterparts at UN

Italy's top diplomat Enzo Moavero Milanesi had" a cordial and in-depth meeting" late Thursday with Ethiopia's foreign minister Workneh Gebeyehu, and Eritrea's foreign minister Osman Saleh on the sidelines of the 73rd United Nations General Assembly in New York. said a foreign ministry statement.

The meeting took place "within the context of Italy’s excellent relations with both "countries" and was organised in support of the landmark peace accord signed by Ethiopia and Eritrea in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on 16 September, September and "the ongoing peace process," said the statement.

The signing of the peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea was "a particularly significant and is a fundamental step toward the stabilisation of the Horn of Africa", the statement said.

Moavero hailed the accord as "a great achievement, capable of having a positive fallout on the entire region", underlining Italy's commitment to both countries and the accord's full enforcement "at international and multilateral levels".

Italy is eager to support Ethiopia’s and Eritrea’s economic growth and sustainable development through cooperation activities and education and vocational training programmes aimed at upgrading the two countries’ human capital, Moavero said.

Moavero also invited Gebeyehu and Saleh to attend "and actively participate in" the Italy-Africa Conference that will be held in Rome on 25 October, according to the statement.

The September accord ended two decades of enmity between Ethiopia and Eritrea sparked by a two-year border conflict which broke out in 1998.

Saudi King Salman hosted the signing ceremony in Jedda which was also attended by his son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres.
