As Venezuela’s humanitarian crisis deepens, ever more people are abandoning the South American country. Approximately 3.5 million Venezuelan migrants have fled to neighboring nations since late 2015. Now, echoing anti-migrant rhetoric used worldwide, officials in Ecuador, Peru and Chile and have begun to tighten border controls, saying Venezuelan migrants are a national security threat. That’s put an even greater burden on Colombia, which continues to welcome desperate Venezuelans. After traveling to Colombia, political scientist Cyril Bennouna wonders how long this open arms policy can last.
Abiy Ahmed, the Ethiopian Prime Minister, has won the Nobel Peace Prize. Abiy took the helm when Ethiopia was in political turmoil and instituted massive political reforms, based on unity and reconciliation. The United Nations Security Council is one of the world body’s most influential organisations. The council - steered by five permanent members - is charged with the responsibility of protecting world peace.
