Henok Mulubrhan, elected African cyclist of the year, dethrones Biniam Girmay

The Eritrean Henok Mulubrhan was elected African cyclist of the year 2023 ahead of his compatriot Biniam Girmay, holder of the trophy for three years.

At 24, the young Eritrean Henok Mulubrhan from the Italian Green Project Bardiani team was named African Cyclist of the Year by a jury of specialists (riders, organizers, managers and African and European journalists) chaired by Bernard Hinault. This trophy, created by the Gabonese organizers of the Tropicale, rewards each year since 2012 the most successful African rider but also the one who most promoted the image of African cycling during the past season.

Committed to Astana until 2025

We find in particular on the list the Eritreans Daniel Teklehaimanot, Natnael Berhane, the Rwandan Joseph Areruya and the South Africans Louis Meintjes and Daryl Impey. Biniam Girmay, the young Eritrean champion elected over the last three years after his resounding victories like Ghent-Wevelgem and a stage of the Giro in 2022, could not do better this year than a second place, therefore beaten by his compatriot Henok Mulubrhan, champion of Africa and also of the Tour of Rwanda and the Tour of Qinghai Lake in China.

The latter's results this season have not gone unnoticed: approached by Soudal-Quick Step and Astana, he finally signed for the Kazakh team until 2025.
