Relations are also characterized by being old and historical, as Egypt played a prominent role in supporting the independence of Eritrea at the beginning of the nineties of the last century, and relations between the two countries have developed since that time at all political, economic and security levels, and witnessed a major boom during the era of President Sisi in light of the Egyptian openness to the Horn of Africa region. Developing Egyptian relations with countries, especially Eritrea and Somalia, on the basis of mutual benefits, common interests, and cooperation in facing various challenges.

The visit of Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki to Egypt and his meeting with President Sisi came within the framework of the ongoing consultation and coordination mechanism between the two countries and periodic meetings aimed at developing bilateral relations at all levels, especially economic and commercial, as the volume of trade exchange currently reaches about 200 million dollars, and there are many promising investment opportunities that can be achieved. Employing it for the benefit of the two countries, as well as developing aspects of cooperation at the cultural, scientific, and health levels, and in the fields of agriculture, tourism, and others, in light of the comparative advantages that the two countries enjoy.

The visit also comes in the context of consensus in visions and positions between Egypt and Eritrea regarding regional issues and various challenges, most notably the war in the Gaza Strip and the necessity of stopping the Israeli aggression and introducing more humanitarian aid to meet the growing needs of the population of the Strip. There is also agreement between the two countries on the importance of achieving security and stability in the Horn of Africa region, as well as strengthening the unity and sovereignty of the State of Somalia and rejecting any steps or measures taken by Ethiopia that detract from Somali sovereignty. Also confronting the threat of terrorism and extremist organizations in the Horn of Africa region. The positions of the two countries agree on the necessity of achieving security and stability in Sudan, stopping the ongoing war there and ending the suffering of the Sudanese people, and working through the mechanism of neighboring countries to reach a political solution to the crisis within the framework of the Sudanese consensus.
