Favourable production prospects for 2024 main season crops

Planting of the 2024 main season crops (wheat, barley, sorghum, maize, teff and pulses), for harvest from November 2023, was completed in July 2024 in central and western Anseba, Debub, Maekel and Gash Barka regions.

The 2024 Kiremti rainy season, which normally extends from late June to September, has been characterized by an early onset in the first dekad of June and by above‑average rains in July and August. Cumulative rainfall amounts have been abundant, up to two times the long‑term average, with a positive impact on crop development and establishment (ASI image).

According to the latest weather forecast by the Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACOF), Kiremti rainfall amounts are expected to continue at above‑average levels for the remainder of the rainy season and crop production prospects are, therefore, favourable.
