Merhawi Kudus is facing a long rehabilitation. The 31-year-old Eritrean – who has been riding for Burgos Burpellet BH since this season – had a bad fall a week ago during the GP La Marseillaise. Kudus was then admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Marseille with multiple broken bones and a collapsed lung.

Kudus fell on Sunday 2 February in one of the descents of the French opening race and was then transported by ambulance to the nearest hospital. The climber was admitted to intensive care due to his many serious injuries.

After additional examinations, the damage could be measured: Kudus suffered fractures in his rib cage, lumbar vertebrae and sacrum during his fall. He is also struggling with a collapsed lung. Kudus is no longer in intensive care, but is still in a 'normal' ward in a hospital in Marseille. "He is in constant contact with the team's medical staff", his team Burgos Burpellet BH reports in a press release.

Out of action for a long time

Kudus will be taken to the hospital in Burgos by ambulance this week. For the time being, a 'conservative treatment' will be applied, in the hope of avoiding surgery. Kudus will be out of action for a long time in any case. It is still unclear when he will be allowed to train again, let alone pin on a number.

Kudus rode for MTN Qhubeka, Astana and EF Education-EasyPost in the early years of his cycling career , but had to take a big step back at the end of 2023. However, he managed to relaunch his career in service of the continental Terengganu Cycling Team. Last year, Kudus finished second in the national cycling tours of Turkey and Japan, among other things, and was also ninth in the Muscat Classic and tenth in the AlUla Tour.
