Brady Gilmore has got a taste for the Tour du Rwanda. The 23-year-old Australian was already the strongest in the second stage-in-line on Tuesday and crossed the finish line first again the next day. After a difficult stage – with the necessary altitude meters – Gilmore had the fastest sprint.

In the fourth stage of the Tour du Rwanda 2025 – the third stage in a row – the climbs were not shied away from. The riders were presented with three climbs between the starting point Musanze and the finish in Rubavu. The top of the last slope – the climb to Rambo (5.4 km at 6.4%) – was a good ten kilometres from the finish. In other words, this seemed like an ideal springboard for the climbers on their way to a possible stage victory.

There is a lot of fuss about the finish city of Rubavu. This city is located in Rwanda, but borders Goma. During the fighting earlier this month, five Rwandan civilians were killed in Rubavu. 26 were also injured. According to the Rwandan army, this was the result of Congolese shelling. According to the organization, however, there is no reason to panic. "All measures have been taken to ensure that this will not happen again.

Leading group of four

The organisation stood firm and so the riders did indeed arrive in Rubavu on Wednesday. Four riders were not deterred by this and chose the open sea early on. Home riders Didier Munyaneza, Samuel Niyonkuru and Etienne Tuyizere joined forces and were joined by Ethiopian Filimon Zerabruk Debay. The peloton let things go and so the lead was able to increase to three minutes.

At about fifty kilometres from the finish, the climb to Rambo was on the menu for the first time. On the flanks of this climb, the leading group split up. Niyonkuru soon proved to have the better climbing legs and threw his fellow escapees overboard. The Rwandan, however, was unlucky because the peloton had also started moving in the meantime. After an unequal battle, he was caught again at more than forty kilometres from the finish.

Wheat from the chaff

The peloton had already thinned out considerably. A first group of about forty riders crossed the finish line in Rubavu for the first time, but a particularly difficult finale – with another climb to Rambo – was still waiting. On this climb, the wheat was separated from the chaff once again. Fabien Doubey – the leader in the classification – took control of the race and decided to shake the tree vigorously.

It turned out to be the start of a fiercely contested final, in which the pace was high and low. An elite group of fifteen riders managed to break away and then rode to the finish. The stage eventually turned into a sprint and Gilmore – once again – came out on top. The 23-year-old rider, a member of the Israel-Premier Tech Academy training team in real life, proved to be clearly the fastest and won by a wide margin.

Gilmore defeated the Eritreans Yoel Habteab and Henok Mulubrhan , the winner of the first stage in line. Doubey finished fourth and is still in the lead in the general classification. However, the difference with his compatriot and teammate Joris Delbove is only one second. Gilmore has now climbed to fourth place. With four stages to go, his deficit is only six seconds.
