Merhawi Kudus was discharged from hospital last week and is currently recovering in Burgos. The Eritrean rider had a serious fall on February 2 during the Grand Prix de la Marseillaise in France, suffering several fractures to the costal arches, lumbar vertebrae and sacrum, as well as a pulmonary contusion with hemo-pneumothorax. The rider was admitted to a hospital in Marseille and, a week later, was transferred to Spain in a medical ambulance.
Once in Burgos, he was admitted to the Recoletas Hospital, where he remained under the supervision of the Burgos Burpellet BH doctors for four weeks. Finally, a week ago, Merhawi was discharged from hospital and is currently staying at the Hotel Ciudad de Burgos, along with other members of the team. This Tuesday he will undergo new medical tests. If the results of these are positive and he receives the approval of the doctors, he could travel to his home in Eritrea in the next few days.
Despite the seriousness of the situation, the rider is doing well, walking with crutches and looking forward to continuing his recovery. The fact that he has not had to undergo surgery has been a positive point in this process. However, no time frame has been set for his return to training and competition. As these are quite serious injuries, we want the recovery to follow its natural course, without any kind of pressure.
