The Tour of Qinghai arrived in Haiyan with Petr Rikunov's first professional victory and Henok Mulubrhan leading the way, a second ahead of Thomas Silva. There were surprises in the penultimate stage, where the Russian rider from the local Chengdu DYC team won the sprint to celebrate his first professional victory of his career.
At 28 years old and trained at Gazprom, Rikunov overtook Italian Enrico Zanoncello (VF Group) and Eritrean Henok Mulubrhan (XDS) on the finish, to the surprise of many in a race that continues to reveal unexpected protagonists. Zanoncello had to settle for second place, while Mulubrhan found solace at a higher altitude, thanks to the bonus seconds at the finish line. He will wear the yellow jersey of the general classification leader tomorrow, after snatching it from the Uruguayan national champion, Thomas Silva (Caja Rural).
Javier Serrano (Polti), in seventh place, and Miguel Angel Fernandez (Kern Pharma), in tenth place, were the best Spanish cyclists in the penultimate stage of the Tour of Qinghai.
