ASMARA\ aise\ - The Italian Ambassador to Eritrea, Alfonso Di Riso , recently visited the Adi Quala Military Memorial, where he laid a laurel wreath in memory of the fallen.
The Memorial holds the remains of
3,643 Italian soldiers who fell in the tragic Battle of Adwa on March 1, 1896.The current Ossuary Monument was erected in October 1939, replacing the commemorative stone placed in 1935, to remember the fallen of Adwa.
The underground crypt, accessed by a staircase behind the monument, contains the remains of some of the fallen, who were collected throughout the battlefield and surrounding areas. Some of the names of Generals Dabormida and Arimondi, Colonels Romero and Airaghi, and Lieutenant Albino are remembered on some of the slabs.
