PRESS STATEMENT Eritrean Public Campaign Committee – World Wide E-SMART Action to Lift the UN Sanction against Eritrea 21 June – 6 July, 2011
Another Timely Call to Annul and Repeal the UN Security Council Sanction Imposed on Eritrea
Once again Eritreans in the Diaspora and friends of Eritrea have sent a resounding worldwide message that calls the UN Security Council to annul and repeal the UN Sanction 1907 of 23 December 2009 imposed on Eritrea. More than 250,000 petitions have thus been sent through e-faxes, emails and telephone calls to all members of the UN Security Council and the Foreign Ministries of their respective countries during the worldwide campaign which ran from June 21 to July 6, 2011. At the end of the campaign, Action Days were also organized in order to extend mobilization, raise the level of organization and harmonize the efforts of Eritreans in the Diaspora to continue the resolute rebuff in defense of their nation.
The campaign has come in a very important timing, however. It is 18 months since the unjust and illegal sanction resolution was imposed on the basis of baseless accusations and fabrications spearheaded by the US and its cohorts but no credible evidence has been presented up till now.
Yet again, under the guidance and influence of the US, the Somalia and Eritrea Monitoring Group is engaged in a ruthless effort to fabricate facts and present a baseless report, with the aim of concocting an atmosphere of maintaining and even extending the sanction resolution.
The appeal sent to the members of the UNSC has thus highlighted and condemned the continuous hostilities of the US Administration on Eritrea. But on the other hand, it has also demonstrated the resilience and strong determination of the Diaspora Eritreans to defend the national interest and stand firmly on the side of the people and the Government of Eritrea.
E-SMART WORLD WIDE ACTION DAY
Through the concerted worldwide campaign and Action Day, Eritreans in the Diaspora and in unison with friends of Eritrea once again called upon the UN Security Council members to:-
· Immediately annul and repeal UNSC resolution 1907 (2009) that imposed unjust and illegal sanctions against Eritrea and its people;
· Highlight the centrality of ending the illegal occupation of sovereign Eritrean territories in the promotion of peace, security and development of the Horn of Africa and exert meaningful pressure on Ethiopia to respect international law, the final and binding delimitation and the November 2007 demarcation decision of the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission (EEBC) and thereby end the illegal occupation of sovereign Eritrean territories;
· Respect the Eritrean people
· Work for a viable and comprehensive peace, security in the Horn of Africa and condemn
all external interventions that complicate the existing problems in the region;
