In a seminar conducted in Glasgow, Scotland on Friday 19th March 2010, the Eritrean Community in the Scotland denounced US led unjust and illegal UNSC sanctions imposed on Eritrea and reaffirmed to stand alongside their people and government to defend the national security of the country.
The Eritrean Ambassador to the UK and Ireland, H.E. Tesfamichael Gerahtu, gave briefings to the participants on the objective situation in the homeland and the envisaged integrated national development programs as well as on the unjust and illegal UN Security Council sanctions resolution 1907/2009. Outlining the overall plan of the Eritrean Mission in the UK, the Ambassador also elaborated on the need to strengthen their unity, empower the Eritrean Community in Scotland and expand the activities of children, youth and families. He further called the participants to redouble their contribution in the national development.
The Ambassador also praised the participation of Eritreans in Scotland and the Scottish Friends of Eritrea in the worldwide anti-sanctions demonstration held in Geneva on the 22nd of February 2010. He stated that the demonstration has sent the resounding message of Eritreans which clearly demonstrated that the people of Eritrea are united and stand on the side of their people and Government to defend the national interest of their country. The Ambassador finally responded to the questions and comments of participants.
Ms Miriam Yasin from the Eritrean Community in Scotland and a member of the Europe level Coordinating body of the National Union of Eritrean Women opened the Seminar. Ms.Haregu Tesfamariam, Head of the Public and Community Affairs of the Embassy also addressed community related issues raised by participants
The participants on their part expressed their readiness to enhance their contribution towards the ongoing nation building process and that they will always stand alongside their people and Government and will rebuff any external conspiracies by strengthening their unity and participation. At the end of the meeting participants resolved to establish organized children, youth, women movements in Scotland, and to conduct a meeting of Eritrean youth in Scotland the next day, and women’s and children’s meetings thereafter.
A meeting of the Eritrean youth led by the Ambassador and the Head of Public and Community Affairs Ms Haregu, was thus conducted on March 20, 2010. An overall discussion on the situation of the Eritrean youth in Scotland, the goals and strategies for an effective youth organization were discussed. At the end of the meeting the 35 participants elected a provisional committee composed of 7 members and decided to raise their participation in all the activities of the Eritrean Community in Scotland and in the development activities back home.
