Thirty months in prison for rape refugee in Nieuwegein

NIEUWEGEIN - A 31-year-old man from Eritrea has been sentenced to 30 months in prison by the Central Netherlands court. In October 2017, he raped a woman he had known for two years from an AZC in Nieuwegein.

On the day in question he asked the woman to come and discuss something. Then he locked the door, grabbed her phone and raped her under the threat of a knife. The court counsels the man that he has misused "a single and vulnerable refugee".

The verdict deviates from the demand of the public prosecutor, who pleaded for four years in prison. The judge adopted the 24-month rural landmark, but took into account the man's attitude. He would not take responsibility for his act. In addition to the prison sentence he may not contact the victim.

At the time the woman was pressured by the Eritrean community not to make a report, but she did. Then she was expelled from that community. "I'm being punished twice," she said at a previous session in a statement that her lawyer read. She now lives at a secret address.

Male (31) from Eritrea gets 30 months in prison for rape in AZC

Cell punishment for rape in refugee shelters

Utrecht / Nieuwegein

On Monday, the Central Netherlands court sentenced a 31-year-old man from Eritrea to a 30-month prison sentence. "In October 2017, he raped a woman he had known for two years from an AZC," the court said on Monday.

Vulnerable victim

The rape took place in a reception center for refugees - often with people traumatized by past experiences. The suspect knew the victim, a single and vulnerable refugee.

The court deviates from the prosecutor's demand. The national orientation points for a rape out of a prison sentence of 24 months. When determining the sentence, the court takes into account the man's attitude. He takes no responsibility for his act. In addition, the court determines that he can not contact the victim.
