"There is huge potential in Eritrea that many do not know " says ZaEr Manager

14 Aug 2019

Have you heard of Dolce Vita, the Made in Eritrea shirts ? It is the brand name of Zambaiti Eritrea Group (ZAER Plc) based in the capital Asmara exporting fine shirts to various brands mainly based in Europe. This year marks the 15th year anniversary of the company and with more than 600 employees of whom about 99% are Eritrean staff working at all level, the company continues to set the standards high in quality and professionalism with good working environment.

Staff is provided with training, possibility to grow in addition to day care as the majority of workers are women. With the motto of team spirit, the production manager of the factory kindly accepted to talk to us about his work and experience working for the company in Eritrea.

Hi! To start with please introduce yourself to our audience..

Hi, my name is Adrian Mazilu. I am from Romania and I am currently working at ZAER Plc here in Asmara as the Production and Planning Manager.

How long have you been working for ZaEr.Plc?

I have been here in Asmara for more than 6 months now, I arrived on the 15th of January 2019 to be precise.

Is it your first time working in Eritrea?

No, it is actually my second time. I worked in Eritrea already between 2007 and 2011 as the Cutting Department Head of ZaEr at that time…

Why did you decide to work in Eritrea, which is so far from home?

During my previous time in Eritrea, I was quite young and it was a new experience. From my previous fours years in Eritrea, I kept good memories and Eritrea remained in my heart. Of course, it is difficult to be far from my family, my home but when you are working in the field that you are passionate about and when you see the results of your work; you get over those issues easily.

From your previous experiences, what is the difference working in Eritrea than other places?

Actually working in management requires the same aptitude throughout the world. In Eritrea, there is a huge potential that many do not know and that’s what we are trying to do through our work. It can be challenging for me to show and prove to anyone that you can make quality products outside of Europe.

How is it to work in Eritrea?

Working in another continent is a great challenge. There aren’t many people who dare to get out of their comfort zone. It is so cherishing to learn from different cultures and Eritrean people are very nice and a pleasure to work with. The country is also beautiful with a huge potential for further development.

We are at the mid-year of 2019, so far how is the production of shirts going?

I believe that the best person to answer this question is the CEO, Pietro Zambaiti as the Factory has been up and running for about 15 years now and he could provide a good comparison between now and then. In my view, thanks to the owner, the company managed to set the production at European standards in terms of quality and production. I think that the company is on the right track and since I am here we have witnessed an increase in shirt production. I will stop here before being deprived of modesty (laugh).

What are the future prospects of ZAER Plc?

In the past, we managed to work for renowned brands and we continue today to produce for various clients mainly based in Europe making our factory focusing about 95% for exports. In the future, we hope to succeed in promoting our label “Made in Eritrea” to many products as possible.

What kind of advise would you give to your colleagues at ZAER.plc?

All staff working at ZAER Plc have to understand and believe that we work as a team and that is the source to success in reaching our targets. Of course I appreciate the hard work of all colleagues without whom we wouldn’t exist!

Thank you Adrian for your time with us and wish you success in your work!

Thank you for having me!
