Asylum requests down in Switzerland

19/08/2019 BY LE NEWS

The latest figures on second quarter asylum requests in Switzerland show a drop of 11% compared to the same quarter in 2018.

In the second quarter of 2019, there were 3,347 requests, according to the government. Eritrea, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka were the three leading countries of origin.

In June, Switzerland’s  State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) processed 1,470 asylum requests. 272 resulted in rejection, 433 were granted asylum and 333 given provisional admission. By the end of the month there were 10,218 pending cases.

The Swiss People’s Party (UDC/SVP) was quick to point out that while the number of requests has gone down the number of refugees and asylum seekers in Switzerland continues to grow, reaching around 125,000, 2,500 more than in 2018. The party claims many are economic migrants and estimates that around CHF 6 billion is spent on refugees and asylum seekers annually, partly because of their widespread dependence on welfare.

SEM says that it aims to keep the number of clearly unjustified asylum applications as low as possible and that failed applicants are removed from Switzerland.
