Dr. Henok Abraha, Psychiatrist in London UK, explains depression & stress in times of Quarantine!
The campaign in the United Kingdom is not just focused on raising funds, but members COVID-19 UK Task Force are coordinating efforts to help the vulnerable and the needy in their local Eritrean community. Due to the pandemic, people are becoming prone to stress and anxiety, which is exacerbated by the information overload disseminated by the mass media and social media with a focus on the negative. But if people take proper hygienic care, keep their distance and have a balanced diet to keep their immune system intact as well as follow all official recommendations and rules regarding the pandemic, they will make it through.Over the past few days, we have learned that a potentially very effective way of slowing down the spread of coronavirus entails minimising the amount of physical contact we have with other people.
The premise is that “social distancing” can buy us valuable time to contain the disease: Hospitals might be able to manage resources more effectively.
So, many of us are starting to work remotely, college students are being sent home, and travel has slowed down considerably. But with this distance also comes isolation, which means you might start to feel lonely.
And we know that loneliness epidemic can be very detrimental to our mental health, in particular as it fuels symptoms of depression. We have to take charge of our social lives and make sure we’re still connecting with others and getting that oxytocin rush that is so important for our emotional health.
We would like to take this opportunity, to give our condolences to the families and to ask all those who can, to ensure that the vulnerable in our community are looked after and given all the necessary help where possible.
We would also like to thank all those who have contributed and pledged funds towards the campaign, and we take this opportunity to express our profound gratitude to all Eritreans & Friend of Eritrea.
