Big party for Duarte Marivoet in the Tour du Rwanda. The 20-year-old Belgian from the UAE Team Emirates training team won the fifth stage in Rwanda on Friday. For Marivoet it is his very first victory as a pro.

Stage five of the Tour du Rwanda contained quite a bit of climbing, but the longest and toughest climbs were in the first part of the stage. The finale was spiced up with some shorter slopes. In the last fifteen kilometers, the riders first encountered a climb of almost three kilometers at 5.5 percent. Just before the finish, another bump of a good kilometer at a good seven percent awaited. There were still twelve riders within a minute of leader Joris Delbove (TotalEnergies), who had scored a double on Thursday.

Leading group gets big lead, peloton thins out

The early breakaway initially consisted of seven riders. On the second climb of the day, to Gisakura (5.8 km at 7.2%), the group thinned out to five riders. Eric Muhoza (Rwanda selection), Ryno Schutte (South Africa selection), Awet Kubrom (Eritrea selection), Gereziher Geremedhin Hailemaryam (Ethiopia selection) and Antoine Berlin (BIKE AID) remained together. They got a big lead: no less than eight minutes.

From the climb through the Nyungwe National Park (8.7 km at 5.7%) – before the halfway point – the pace increased for the chasers. The lead of the attackers quickly diminished and the peloton thinned out just as quickly. An elite group of only seventeen riders formed behind the leaders. This included Delbove, his teammate Fabien Doubey (second in the classification), Oliver Mattheis (third), two-time stage winner Brady Gilmore (fourth) and Henok Mulubrhan (fifth). The big favourites for the final victory were therefore alert.

Marivoet solos to first professional victory

The young Belgian Marivoet was also alert. He was the first from the elite group to cross over to the leading group, after which he was able to make good use of Hailemaryam for several kilometres. In the final phase of the race, Marivoet left him behind to start his decisive solo. In the final kilometre, Marivoet was joined by glutton Gilmore, who was on the hunt for his third stage victory and had jumped away from the elite group.

Miraculously, Marivoet got Gilmore off again in the final stages of the race, after which the Belgian booked his first professional victory. In Butare he would eventually cross the finish line with a lead of 25 seconds on numbers two and three Awet Aman and Fabien Doubey. Gilmore finished in fourth place in the same time.

Congratulations to Henok Mulubrhan (Eritrea) for defending his Best African Rider title in style! He conquered the second-longest stage of this year’s Tour du Rwanda, tackling the scenic but demanding route from Rusizi through the breathtaking Nyungwe Forest and into the heart of Huye.
