Poland's presidential poll: a boost for anti-EU sentiment

Karol Nawrocki, who ran on a nationalist and anti-liberal ticket, won Poland’s presidential elections by the slimmest of margins. He beat his rival, the pro-EU mayor of Warsaw Rafał Trzaskowski, by 50.89 to 49.11%. Poland’s president holds few executive powers but can veto legislation. Adam Simpson sets out why Nawrocki’s win has given pro-Donald Trump and anti-EU forces across the continent a shot in the arm, and why it’s bad news for the EU, Ukraine and women.

Mauritius has won a decent amount of money and a diplomatic victory in finally being granted sovereignty over the strategically positioned Chagos islands, which were still under UK colonial rule. But the country’s economy is losing global competitiveness. If Mauritius spends its new cash injection wisely, argue two economic development strategists Dev K (Roshan) Boojihawon and Samuel Adomako, it could set a sustainable new direction and unlock prosperity.
